Core Conferences

Weekly conferences are held every Wednesday morning for the General Surgery residency program.  Clinics and elective operating time have been organized to eliminate conflicts and to allow nearly all residents to attend each week’s events. Residents rotating with the Division of General Surgery are expected to participate in all educational activities.

Surgical Quality Conference (fka Morbidity & Mortality Conference) begins at 7:00 a.m. and the service chief residents lead these discussions.  The American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Project (ACS NSQIP) criteria are used to define reportable morbidity.

Immediately following the Surgical Quality Conference, Grand Rounds are presented by faculty members, guest lecturers and chief residents.

On Fridays at noon, residents gather in a classroom for didactic conference with select faculty. We follow the SCORE curriculum and discuss board prep questions and scenarios. 

Journal Club is held on the third Thursday of the month at a local restaurant. One chief resident has the responsibility for choosing the topic, the journal articles and for moderating the lively discussions between residents and faculty.

Additionally, specialty conferences and journal clubs are available in Transplant, Trauma, SICU, Vascular, CT, and Pediatrics. While these conferences are rotation-specific, they are open to all residents whose clinical obligations permit their participation.

Mock Orals are held twice a year for PGY-4's and PGY-5's.  We mimic the format of the American Board of Surgery which provides excellent practice and preparation for the actual certifying examination.
